About Interactive Brokers¶
Interactive Brokers traces its start to 1977, when founder Thomas Peterffy bought a seat on the American Stock Exchange and began trading as an options market maker. His firm became a pioneer in computerized trading and the brokerage grew out of that technology. The company is based in Greenwich, Connecticut, is regulated by the SEC, FINRA, the FCA and other agencies around the world, and reported $22.3 billion in equity capital at the start of 2026.
For currency traders it offers more than 100 pairs across 28 currencies, with real-time quotes from 17 of the world's largest foreign exchange dealers and spreads as narrow as one tenth of a pip. Instead of marking up the spread, it charges a commission of 0.08 to 0.20 basis points of the trade size, depending on monthly volume. The FXTrader tool in Trader Workstation is a trading screen built for the currency markets, and there is a separate facility for quoting large orders.
What makes it different from a dedicated forex broker is that currencies sit in the same account as stocks, options, futures and bonds. Accounts can be funded and held in up to 29 currencies, and you can attach a currency order to a foreign stock trade to convert or hedge at the same time. It is aimed at experienced traders who want interbank-style pricing more than at beginners looking for a simple app.
